Thai Cave Rescue: Haskel Under Pressure in Critical Situations

By Michael GT Cassie, Scotland Sales Engineer – Haskel Systems
In the summer of 2018, the world was captivated by the dramatic rescue of a young soccer team trapped in the Tham Luang cave in Thailand. This high-stakes operation highlighted the critical importance of reliable technology in life-saving missions. Among the key players in this rescue was a Haskel gas booster, which proved indispensable in ensuring the safety and success of the operation. For our Haskel Legacy Series, I have written about Haskel's legacy of reliability and safety in high-pressure environments, focusing on our technology’s role in the Thai cave rescue.
Our Legacy
A junior soccer team and their assistant coach found themselves trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system in northern Thailand. The team, consisting of twelve boys aged 11 to 16 and their 25-year-old coach, entered the cave after a practice session, only to be caught off guard by sudden heavy rainfall. The downpour flooded the cave system, blocking their exit and leaving them stranded deep within its dark, winding passages.
For over a week, the group was out of contact with the outside world, as rising water levels and strong currents hampered rescue efforts. The situation drew intense global attention, prompting a massive international rescue operation. Two weeks in, British divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton made a breakthrough, locating the group alive on an elevated rock 4 kilometers from the cave entrance.
The rescue operation was a race against time, with organizers considering various extraction methods, including teaching the boys to dive or waiting for the monsoon season to end. Ultimately, after days of pumping water and a brief respite from the rain, the decision was made to extract the group before the next expected downpour. All 12 boys and their coach were successfully rescued by an international team.
The operation involved an astounding 10,000 people, including over 100 divers, 900 police officers, and 2,000 soldiers. Tragically, the mission claimed the life of Saman Kunan, a former Royal Thai Navy SEAL, who died of asphyxiation while delivering diving cylinders.
Haskel’s Role in Thai Cave Rescue
Haskel has been a leader in high-pressure technology solutions for over 75 years, with a legacy built on innovation, reliability, and safety. The Thai cave rescue is a testament to this legacy. Initially, a competitor's gas booster was used in the operation, but it failed under the intense demands of the mission. In response, a Haskel gas booster, which was originally manufactured in 1980, was brought in. This decades-old, refurbished unit performed flawlessly throughout the rescue, refilling the oxygen cylinders for the divers and ensuring they had the necessary air supply to navigate the treacherous cave system. When it’s a life-saving mission, you want to be reassured that the equipment used won’t fail you! This success story underscores Haskel's commitment to providing equipment that performs reliably in critical situations, reinforcing the trust placed in our products by users worldwide.
