Decades of Dependability: The Hidden Power of Haskel’s Aftermarket Services

Haskel’s Aftermarket Services

By Simon Calvert, Aftermarket Sales Engineer – Haskel Systems

When a Royal Navy diver descends into deep waters, when special forces surface in stealth operations, or when hydrogen refuelling stations serve communities with safety and precision - there’s one constant behind the scenes: Haskel's aftermarket services.

In nearly three decades with Haskel, I’ve learned that the real measure of engineering excellence isn’t just what we build, it’s how long it lasts. And more importantly, how well it continues to perform when lives, livelihoods, and missions depend on it.

I joined Haskel in the 1990s as the company’s very first service manager. Today, I lead our aftermarket sales efforts—an area of the business that, while not always in the spotlight, plays a critical role in keeping our technology safe, reliable, and in use for decades. This is my story of the unsung legacy of service.

Our Legacy

Take our work with the UK Ministry of Defence. Between 1998 and 2001, we supplied 84 custom-built air-operated gas boosters designed to support specialist deep-sea divers on Royal Navy minehunter vessels. These aren’t your everyday scuba sets—they’re complex, mixed-gas systems tailored for silent, magnetic-free operation to avoid triggering mines.

We built those systems over two decades ago, and they’re still in service today.

Every 30 months, those units come back to us for a full refurbishment. We strip each one down to the bolts, deep clean every part using oxygen-safe chemicals, and rebuild it in our military-grade cleanroom. Each unit is tested and certified to an “as-new” standard before it’s returned to service.

Some of the oldest Haskel equipment I’ve handled dates all the way back to the early 1970s. And it still works!

That’s not just engineering, that’s engineering with responsibility. Especially with oxygen systems, where safety is non-negotiable. A trace of hydrocarbon and a spark is all it takes for catastrophe. That’s why our service processes are so rigorous. We don’t just repair, we reset the clock.

Our Repair and service centre(s)

Our customers range from defence and aerospace to hydrogen, energy, and subsea testing. The common thread? Every one of them depends on performance under pressure.

We offer tailored on-site service contracts (some of which have lasted over 15 years) where our team maintains critical equipment on the customer’s premises at set intervals. In other cases, systems are shipped to our Sunderland facility for repair, refurbishment, or upgrade.

Smarter Maintenance for Modern Systems

As our technology evolves, so does the way we maintain it. Our latest H-Drive and Q-Drive hydrogen systems feature built-in alerts that notify operators when service is due. When customers partner with us for on-site agreements, we commit to four-hour triage and 12-hour callout times.

That kind of speed matters—especially when your refueling station is next to a school or transport hub. These systems don’t just compress gas, they build public confidence in the safety of a your project.

The Future of Service

At the moment, around 40 customers have active service contracts with us. But our ambition is bigger. I want every customer to see aftermarket service not as a “nice to have,” but as essential insurance on a mission-critical investment.

We don’t just fix. We extend life. We protect performance. And we earn trust.

Because when you’re working with high-pressure systems, whether on a naval vessel, an offshore rig, or a hydrogen refueling station, you want to know the people who built it are still standing behind it.
