H-Drive System Module (HSM)

Safely and reliably compress gaseous hydrogen to high pressures

The H-Drive System Module (HSM) is a next-generation hydrogen compression solution from Haskel—engineered to meet the demands of system builders and integrators.

Designed for flexibility and simplicity, the HSM enables easy integration into hydrogen refueling stations, production sites, and industrial applications.

  • Powered by two hydraulic driven boosters to provide two stages of compression
  • Provides the flexibility to provide an integrated or detached hydraulic drive system
  • Generates pressures up to 950 bar and flowrates to 63kg H2/hr

As a flexible, certified and compact compression module built to simplify integration and accelerate hydrogen infrastructure deployment.

As a gas compressor skid, HSM offers:

  • Hydrogen service certified to ATEX EX II 3G IIC
  • Pressure output: up to 500 or 950 bar
  • Flowrate: up to 63 kg/hr at higher inlet pressures
  • Hydraulic-driven, two-stage compression
  • Modular configuration: ECM, cooling module, and hydraulic power unit flexibility

Every component of the HSM is designed with reliability and safety in mind:

  • Integrated heat exchangers to manage high gas outlet temperatures (up to 160°C)
  • Pressure and temperature sensors, isolation valves, and relief systems
  • Pneumatic control system operated via compressed air for valve actuation
  • Bypass circuit monitoring to track seal wear and plan maintenance

Haskel’s H-Drive System Module (HSM), a gas compressor skid, is a time and cost saving solution for the hydrogen sector, addressing the varied and dynamic needs of system builders and integrators.

Whether used in transportation, industrial, or storage settings, the module delivers safe, efficient, and flexible hydrogen compression technology that aligns with global sustainability goals. As countries and industries move towards decarbonization, Haskel's state-of-the-art HSM embodies its commitment to innovation and excellence in engineering vital equipment essential to the future of sustainable energy.

The HSM provides everything required for high pressure compression—encased in a robust stainless-steel frame, and ready to connect with your broader hydrogen system. To establish a fully operational system, further modules of equipment are required to provide coolant to the compressors as well as electrical power and system control.

Whether pre-integrated with a hydraulic power unit or configured for remote installation, the HSM delivers tailored performance, shorter lead times, and scalable deployment.

Two H-Drive hydraulic gas boosters are the power behind the H-Drive SM. Haskel gas boosters are noted for their capability to start on a load and meet the demands of frequent start /stop operation, and continuous heavy-duty applications. A gas tight, non-contaminating design maintains gas purity, making them ideal for Hydrogen fuel cell applications.

Proven Across Applications

The HSM is designed to meet the most demanding hydrogen compression needs across sectors:

  1. Hydrogen Refueling Stations: Compress hydrogen for direct fueling of FCEVs (350 & 700 bar)
  2. Energy Storage & Backup Power: Fill high pressure storage vessels for industrial power continuity or off-grid energy.
  3. Hydrogen Distribution: Support hydrogen trailer filling to transport compressed gas from production to usage sites.
  4. Industrial & Process Applications: Ideal for high pressure hydrogen needs in ammonia or methanol synthesis, or fuel cell testing.

Hydraulic Power Unit Integration with H-Drive System Module

As a gas compressor skid, the H-Drive System Module (HSM) includes the option to provide the hydraulic power unit (HPU) fully integrated within the skid, or to be disconnected and standalone.

HSM SK1 Model – Fully integrated hydraulic power unit for compact, plug-and-play systems

SK1 Model provides the hydraulic power unit connected to the compressors on a single, two-piece skid and the entire assembly is suitable for Ex II 3G IIC environments and is configurable for maximum pressure of 500 or 950 bar.

This is suitable for system builders that want a product with the least amount of integration.

HSM SK2 Model – Hydraulic power unit provided separately, allowing more design flexibility and ATEX-safe zoning

SK2 model provides the hydraulic power unit separately to the main compressor assembly to allow for a more flexible installation. It can be configured to supply a maximum pressure of 500 or 950 bar.

This option allows for more flexibility regarding the positioning and installation of the HPU within the overall system.
