A needle valve uses a slender, tapered stem that moves into a small orifice. This lets you adjust flow precisely and close the valve completely when needed.

BuTech needle valves bring that precision to high-pressure gas and liquid systems in oil & gas, hydrogen, chemical processing, power generation, research and industrial service.

The range runs from 1/8" NPT pipe valves rated to 15,000 psi up to cone-and-thread designs rated to 150,000 psi (10,340 bar).

How a BuTech Needle Valve Works

When you turn the handle, the stem moves toward or away from the seat in small, controlled steps. A partly open valve meter flows precisely. A fully closed valve gives positive shutoff. Every BuTech design is built to deliver both functions repeatably:

  • A non-rotating stem tip presses straight onto the seat without twisting. This prevents galling and scoring, so shutoff stays tight cycle after cycle.
  • A 17-4PH stem is hardened for a longer service life.
  • Glass-filled PTFE packing is rated to 600°F (315°C). Optional packings and extended stuffing boxes extend the range from -423°F to +1,200°F (-253°C to +648°C).
  • A positive gland locking device keeps the packing secure under vibration.

Choose the Right Stem Style

The stem tip determines how the valve behaves:

  • Vee stem: fast, positive shutoff for on/off isolation
  • Regulating stem: smooth, progressive flow adjustment
  • Metering stem: fine control of low flow rates
  • Micro-metering stem: the finest adjustment, for very low flow
  • Soft tip: a resilient seat for bubble-tight shutoff on gases (available on NPT pipe valves)

You can choose 2-way straight or angle patterns. Angle patterns increase flow capacity (Cv) by about 50%.

Key Features

  • Precise metering and positive shutoff in one valve
  • Pressure ratings up to 150,000 psi (10,340 bar)
  • Non-rotating stem tip that prevents galling and scoring
  • Five stem styles, in straight and angle patterns
  • Cold-worked 316 stainless steel as standard. Hastelloy, Inconel, Titanium, Monel 400 or any machinable metal on request
  • NPT and cone-and-thread connections
  • Built-in mounting holes, with a panel-mount option
  • Dedicated hydrogen, sour gas and subsea designs
BuTech Applications

Applications

Instrumentation and process control: Isolate gauges, transmitters and analyzers, and throttle sample flow to them.

Hydrogen generation, compression, storage and refueling: Control and isolate gas at each stage, using materials chosen to resist embrittlement.

Oil & gas production and processing: Wellhead gauge isolation, chemical injection metering and sour service with NACE-compliant designs.

Pressure testing and calibration: Controlled pressurization and venting on test benches up to 150,000 psi.

Chemical and petrochemical processing: Fine metering of additives and reliable isolation, with exotic alloys available for corrosive media.

Laboratory and research facilities: Micro-metering control for high-pressure R&D rigs and experimental systems.

Hydraulic and pneumatic systems: Speed control, isolation and bleed functions on high-pressure circuits.

Offshore and subsea: Long-life isolation and metering on subsea injection and control lines down to 14,000 ft.

Carbon capture and CO₂ service: Cycle-resistant shutoff on CO₂ compression skids and pipelines. The non-rotating stem tip stands up to frequent cycling.

FAQ

A needle valve is used to precisely control flow rates and provide positive shutoff in liquid and gas systems. Its tapered stem design allows for accurate flow adjustment compared to standard isolation valves.
